The Procedure
What Is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy uses a thin, flexible tube with a camera to examine the inside of your colon and rectum. It’s one of the most effective tools in medicine — not just for detecting problems, but often for resolving them in the same appointment. Dr. Meyerson can identify and remove polyps before they become cancerous, often without any additional procedures.
Routine screening is one of the highest-value steps you can take for your long-term health. The conditions colonoscopy detects are far more treatable — and often preventable — when caught early.
Detected & Addressed
Common Findings
- Polyps — identified and typically removed during the colonoscopy
- Colorectal cancer — the earlier it’s caught, the better the potential outcome
- Inflammation — often identified by irritation and bleeding
- Digestive system issues — that may have gone unnoticed
- Ongoing conditions — that may require specialist-level evaluation

Indications
Who Should Get a Colonoscopy?
Current guidelines recommend routine colonoscopy screening beginning at age 45 for average-risk individuals. If you have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, your doctor may recommend starting earlier.
You may benefit from a colonoscopy if you:
- Are 45 or older (routine screening)
- Have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
- Experience rectal bleeding or unexplained abdominal pain
- Have chronic constipation, diarrhea, or changes in bowel habits
- Want a specialist evaluation — not a general GI referral
- Are due for a follow-up after previous polyp removal
Beyond routine screening, a colonoscopy may be appropriate if you’ve been experiencing symptoms you haven’t been able to get to the bottom of — rectal bleeding, chronic changes in bowel habits, unexplained abdominal pain, or persistent digestive issues that haven’t responded to treatment.
Many patients come to Dr. Meyerson after being referred by a primary care physician or gastroenterologist and wanting to see a dedicated specialist. As Pennsylvania’s only board-certified proctologist, Dr. Meyerson brings a depth of experience with colorectal conditions that general GI practices often don’t offer.

The Experience
What to Expect
For many patients, the anticipation is harder than the procedure itself. Here’s what actually happens — and how Dr. Meyerson makes every step as straightforward as possible.
01
Preparation
You’ll receive clear, practical instructions on dietary guidelines and bowel prep. Dr. Meyerson’s team walks you through exactly what to do and answers any questions before your appointment — nothing is left ambiguous.
02
During the Procedure
The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. You’ll be comfortably sedated, and Dr. Meyerson personally performs the examination — carefully examining the full colon and may remove any polyps found. You won’t be handed off to a resident or associate.
03
Recovery
Most patients go home the same day. Mild bloating is common and resolves quickly. Before you leave, Dr. Meyerson personally reviews your results with you — explaining what was found, what it means, and what comes next. Nothing is left for a follow-up letter or a phone call from a nurse you’ve never met.
04
Next Steps & Options
If anything requires further attention, Dr. Meyerson takes the time to walk through every available option — including non-surgical approaches wherever they’re appropriate and viable. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of your situation, not a referral to figure out on your own.
Dr Meyerson is an absolute professional. After struggling with my issue for a while, I finally feel like I’m on the right track. He provided a clear diagnosis and a straightforward treatment plan without overcomplicating things. The office is efficient, and the follow up care has been excellent. If you want a doctor who is thorough and highly skilled, look no further.

Why a Specialist
The Uniqueness of a Proctologist
Large hospital GI departments and multi-physician groups offer colonoscopies. What they don’t offer is 30+ years of dedicated colorectal specialization — and a practice built on the principle that patients deserve to talk directly with their doctor, not a care team.
30+ Years of Dedicated Colorectal Expertise
As Pennsylvania’s only board-certified proctologist, Dr. Meyerson has spent his entire career focused on the colon, rectum, and anorectal conditions — not rotating through general gastroenterology.
You See the Doctor, Not Staff
Every appointment, every procedure, every results conversation happens with Dr. Meyerson directly. There’s no hand-off to nurses or associates for the parts that matter most.
Every Option on the Table
Dr. Meyerson takes the time to explore every treatment pathway — surgical and non-surgical — before recommending any procedure. If something can be avoided, he’ll tell you.
Pennsylvania’s Only Board-Certified Proctologist
Board certification in proctology is rare. Dr. Meyerson is the only practitioner in Pennsylvania to hold this distinction — through focused training and experience that a general GI pathway cannot replicate.
